Romans Bible Sketches

What is good?

Is good the same for everyone?

Can terrible situations end up leading to good?

Our Creator unconditionally loves us. How do we reciprocate?

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV
And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28 ESV

With freedom to think and act however we choose, we should seek to find the good and be thankful in all things.

Too often, we fail to show gratitude. We make poor choices. What seems weird to our little minds is, that to take away punishment we deserve, God had planned and allowed His innocent willing Son to endure being mocked, beaten, lifted up on the cross, and humiliated by a slow painful death.

We perceive much of what happens in this world as bad, however, everything our glorious unchanging God controls is actually for the good of the people He created who love Him—all is either hidden or revealed in His perfect timelessness.

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. Romans 1:18-19

Our Father in Heaven hates all things which are bad for us.

His Word helps us discover that twisting, suppressing or trading Truth for lies is dangerous. The Spirit of Truth shows us how to trust our dependable Savior for forgiveness and how to live a different life that

  • pursues peace
  • turns away from lies
  • is honest
  • is open to correction
  • is grateful for protection
  • is certain about the promise of an eternal home with Jesus

For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. Romans 1:20 ESV

Wholesome Truth breaks down contamination

Our downfall and the vexation of our relationships result from the combination of our bad thoughts, words and deeds which poison the pure goodness God desires for us. Repeatedly succumbing to the devil’s temptation to pick and twist Truth sends us spinning into a messy downward spiral that tries to suck others in as well. Problems increase by our bad choice to remain unchecked. Refusing help puts at risk the faith which trusts Christ’s purpose.

Receiving help allows God’s warm love to dissolve what has become harshly cold and rigidly hardhearted. The work of the Holy Spirit transitions us into softer people who are more flexible and genuinely friendly. As baptized, beloved, adopted children of God, His good will for us is the way of life which fears, loves, and trusts our Heavenly Father’s mercy above all things, frequently worships Him, prays to receive forgiveness, correction and help, then passes hope on to others willing to receive the Gospel for strength to resist natural sinful inclinations which would rather

  • demand entitlement to what, when, where, and how we want things
  • carelessness of what would be good for others
  • say we are good, proud, and in tune with modern society of this world
  • ingratitude for how good we actually do have things
  • hypocritically claim we are good
  • persist we already know better than others, so refuse to listen to them
  • think or speak negatively about the good fortune or success of others
  • judge and hold others in contempt
  • defame the good reputation of another
  • manipulate
  • make light of problems recorded in Romans 1:18-32
An interesting post tells more: The Righteousness of God for You: God’s Righteous Wrath against Man’s Unrighteousness.

We never completely grow up to God’s standard of excellence, nor to another person’s flawed ideal. Consistent failure to do the good we want to do is more obvious than we like to admit. Doing the bad we shouldn’t exceeds what we care to discover about ourselves. A self-deceptive blame-shift tactic in attempt to escape responsibility for personal problems unfairly projects those issues onto someone else; also, changing the subject and making excuses are ploys to distract from festering guilt that resists confession. To pacify the inner child, we stoop low, rather than stand up straight in order to observe ourselves in the mirror and light of God’s Word.

Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. Romans 2:1

They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them Romans 2:15

Sin tarnishes everyone’s reputation and is the very reason suffering and death exists.

for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23

By faith in the Word, we understand that the Lord has compassion.

As we mature in the faith, we pray that our inner childish disobedience becomes more recognizable so we can confess quickly with sincere gratitude for grace in confidence that Christ removes sin as far as the east is from the west. Jesus compassionately lifts us sinners up to rescue, comfort and safely carry us through risky and terrible situations.

For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Romans 3:28

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 6:23

An interesting post questions: So, Who Will You Serve?

Deep down, we do have a sense of God’s version of good. He designed us with scruples to realize His good will is superior to our own selfish tendencies.

For I know that nothing good dwells in me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out. Romans 7:18

Regarding the problem of sin and its consequences, no amount of

  • denial
  • blame
  • book knowledge
  • working harder
  • scrambling for self-made solutions

does what humble, honest, trust in Christ’s accomplishment for us does. The Bible establishes direction for how to stop sinning, but humans will always struggle, incapable to carry out those commands. The repentance God provides allows us to admit we absolutely cannot rid ourselves of sin, death or the power of the devil on our own. God is God and we are not, so we cannot expect to fix or control things.

Relying on the loving work of Jesus is the only way to let go of what weighs us down.

Only by receiving the faith, we are made right by Jesus. Released of shame, we may contentedly carry out his purposes. This doesn’t mean the scars are gone [memories of trouble, pain, lack of trust, and sadness], or that all in the world will suddenly align to our personal liking; but that we have certain hope which is set free from sin’s negativity, heaviness, and eternal consequences. In light of receiving forgiving faith, we take on our responsibility to release and confess our own bad behavior. Believing in the victory Jesus won at the cross and resurrection, the Spirit He sent to live in us is constantly working and motivating us to receive mercy and grace as well as offer it to others. Confession and absolution keeps us honest and peacefully ready to move forward.

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, Romans 8:1

What good comes from pride, jealousy, selfish meddling and hurtful arrogant actions based on unmerited authority or stubborn self-righteousness? No good—only an influx of frustration and confusion—while the junk of our fallen human nature stirs up misery.

For the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God, for it does not submit to God’s law; indeed, it cannot. Romans 8:7

Surprisingly, the Almighty’s judgement isn’t based on perfection apart from Christ. It is based on timeless Scriptural grace (among various views on grace) for those who rely upon our perfect Substitute for forgiveness. Since humanity is estranged from our all-knowing God because of our unholy thoughts, messed-up desires and worthless deeds, our Heavenly Father has freed us to take refuge in Christ’s extraordinary work for graciousness designed with good purpose specifically for us to share the Good News! Sadly, some won’t receive the gift. Rejection of the Holy Spirit’s gifts of Truth and repentance, Scripture warns, means self-exclusion from the gift of eternity in paradise with Jesus. A person’s choice to deny the free gift of faith in Christ precedes their damnation to an eternal destination of never-ending misery in hell.

No favorites.

Our Creator compassionately wants all to be rescued from hell on Judgement Day. He lowered Himself to become human, born of a virgin, for us. Though we are not, He was perfectly good while He lived with us. One horrible day, the innocent man Jesus became sin that is hated by God in taking violent punishment and death on the cross so we all can become right by Him and live. Wow! Undeserving Christians call this Good Friday. Christ descended to hell, on the third day rose from the grave so that we can, too, because He ascended to heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father and intercedes for us. The Helper’s gifts of faith and forgiveness are in the water of Baptism and Word spoken in the Name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. His body and blood—given for us during the Lord’s Supper, together in the Church—is where we receive forgiveness and strength. In the Spirit of Truth, with purified minds, we trust and are justified in Christ Jesus for our salvation.

And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:27 ESV

There’s no other way we can be proud of anything except to boast about the fear and faith we have in God for mercy and grace our Savior provides. Listen to the Music.

The complexity of God’s control—always appointing time and working things together—is well beyond comprehension.

His good solutions may not be revealed to us in this lifetime. Nor may we ever know the whole story of why God permits certain details to happen or how He works with mistakes and around inadequacies to achieve His good purpose for us or someone else. It’s okay, even good, to not know it all. It’s hard work to be patient and content with God’s ways of handling difficult things to serve His good purposes. Adversity increases appetite for Scripture which satisfies us with the fullness of a meaningful life that leans on Jesus and on other Christians. The peace He provides is sufficient. That is very good!

Comfort is for those who, baptized and hearing the Word of God, love Christ’s purpose.

God’s good is that He died on the cross to give meaning to life. If we wish to refuse that good gift by our own choice to stay away or leave it behind, that’s completely on us. It is not His intent that we deny the grace He offers.

Romans 8:28, 31b

And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. … If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:28, 31b NIV
And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. … If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:28, 31b NIV

In all things God is graciously working for the good of those who love Him, called to his purpose. With that, who can be against us?

We don’t always get what we want; yet in God’s control of all things, we get the good we don’t deserve. Because we can’t stop sinning or achieve perfection, Christ our merciful Lord justifies us and makes us holy.

He who did not spare his own Son but gave him up for us all, how will he not also with him graciously give us all things? Romans 8:32

Romans 8:34

Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:34 ESV
Who is to condemn? Christ Jesus is the one who died—more than that, who was raised—who is at the right hand of God, who indeed is interceding for us. Romans 8:34 ESV

The devil is a tricky liar who tempts us into trusting idols and losing the faith.

We don’t love Christ when we rebel by putting anything or anyone in a higher position than God. We need to be corrected. Grounded by repentance, constantly immersed in Truth of baptism and hearing God’s Word, we win! Empowered with knowledge that Jesus died, was raised and is with God for us, in Christ, we have received these gifts:

  • we have died to sin
  • are raised to new life
  • with Jesus standing for us, nothing else is needed.

Romans 8:35-37

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:35-37 NIV

As it is written: “For your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. Romans 8:35-37 NIV

Trouble, hardship, danger, persecution and suffering doesn’t separate us from God’s love for us.

God authorizes trouble and hardship, plus, He also makes good in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loves us. Absolutely nothing—no person, power, mood, difficult situation, danger, sorrow, death, natural disaster, the devil, anything present or to come—will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17
For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Romans 11:29

Romans 12:2

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2

By the Word and Spirit of Christ who atoned for all, we are transformed to worship Him.

Though earning our way into God’s good grace isn’t possible and we could never repay the debt He paid for our sins, we pray for help to do what is appropriate within His will. Our entire mind, body, and life of living together functions, according to the measure of faith given to us, while we grow in wisdom of His grace.

Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Romans 12:9

Romans 12:10-13

Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Romans 12:10-13

Affectionately yours, God.

Consider what the Bible says about being useful with God’s gifts. We may ask the Lord for opportunities to serve. He generously provides capability to contribute to needs of all who trust Him. God’s Word is the source for good order, strong conscience in the Gospel, and joyful privilege to share cheerful acts of mercy.

  • honor
  • zeal to lead for the good of others
  • compassionate spirit
  • rejoicing in the hope of the Last Day
  • patience in trouble and heartache
  • constant prayer
  • seek to show hospitality
  • bless
  • care
  • bear with the failings of the weak
  • endure suffering without retaliation
  • encourage
  • mutual up-building in love

Christians look to the Lord who gives us good work to do as well as rest, weeping, and dancing. He wants us to enjoy his gifts which are made beautiful in appropriate time ordered by Him in eternal existence.

Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Romans 12:14

Persecute synonyms: expel, harass, hound, injure, maltreat, molest, oppress, outrage, pick on, pursue, torture, victimize, afflict, aggrieve, annoy, badger, bait, beat, bother, distress, dog, dragoon, exile, hector, hunt, ill-treat, martyr, pester, plague, tease, tyrannize, vex, worry, be on one’s case, drive up the wall.

How do we bless? Although not guaranteed, goodness is more likely to drive an abuser to repentance than punishment or revenge. When another person’s unsettling behaviors mess with the mind, the Holy Spirit encourages us to rise above it.

Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. Romans 12:15-21

Take time to pray and think about how to handle everything for the sake of living peaceably, if possible, as far as it depends on you. Be sensitive with someone who is weeping and don’t push them to sing. Sing with someone who is rejoicing! Interact with people whom the Helper supplies to steer you out of isolation toward His love and grace; seek to be there for others if they will receive and allow you to help.

Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. Romans 15:13 ESV

The power of the Spirit of Truth accomplishes joy and peace in belief that we are richly filled and well supplied to trust in an eternal future with the God of hope.

Harmony is when everybody has the same view of God’s purpose to spread the Gospel which is the power of God for salvation to redeem everyone who believes. Living in harmony doesn’t mean we agree on everything, yet by discernment and sensitivity to what is important and what isn’t, small things needn’t get in the way. It’s by grace that we meet people where they are. Good doesn’t come from us or something we do apart from keeping our eyes on Jesus. The Holy Spirit creates the repentant faith for us to receive as we learn from the Lord of hope who fills us with joy and peace in believing!

One final word of counsel, friends. Keep a sharp eye out for those who take bits and pieces of the teaching that you learned and then use them to make trouble. Give these people a wide berth. They have no intention of living for our Master Christ. They’re only in this for what they can get out of it, and aren’t above using pious sweet talk to dupe unsuspecting innocents. And so while there has never been any question about your honesty in these matters—I couldn’t be more proud of you!—I want you also to be smart, making sure every “good” thing is the real thing. Don’t be gullible in regard to smooth-talking evil. Stay alert like this, and before you know it the God of peace will come down on Satan with both feet, stomping him into the dirt. Enjoy the best of Jesus! Romans 16:17-20 MSG

Thank the good Lord! His mercy endures forever!

to the only wise God be glory forevermore through Jesus Christ! Amen. Romans 16:27 ESV

Worksheets, notes and doodles from a few of the Romans Bible Studies enjoyed in the past five years. Each only scratching the surface of what the Bible contains, with distractions, forgetfulness and various perspectives to consider, Bible study is a lifelong process. It’s necessary to be reminded often that I am a baptized and beloved child of God. Forgiveness and encouragement is essential, over and over again.
Worksheets, notes and doodles from a few of the Romans Bible Studies enjoyed in the past five years. Little-by-little I’m barely scratching the surface of the inerrant Word of God. With distractions, forgetfulness and perspectives to consider, Bible study is a lifelong process. It’s necessary to be reminded often that I am baptized and a beloved child of God. Forgiveness and encouragement is essential, over and over again.

I am baptized into the life, death and resurrection of Christ.

Since before I was born, I heard about God’s Word during church with Mom and while she read the Bible out loud for my family during the week. The Holy Spirit encourages me to cherish the gift of the Word and even during the part of my life when I didn’t put much effort into studying it, helped me remain curious. Thankfully, experiencing adult Bible studies together with church family and among friends, we are blessed to collect valuable nuggets of Sacred inspiration in an ongoing process of growing in the faith that has been given to us. I pray that everyone would welcome wonderful life enhancing opportunities to learn about the goodness of God and what a friend we have in Jesus, amen!

Excellent study of Romans

I Leave All things to God’s Direction
Listen to hymn audio

I leave all things to God’s direction;
He loves me both in joy and woe.
His will is good, sure His affection;
His tender love is true, I know.
My fortress and my rock is He:
What pleases God, that pleases me.

God knows what must be done to save me;
His love for me will never cease.
Upon His hands He did engrave me
With purest gold of loving grace.
His will supreme must ever be:
What pleases God, that pleases me.

My God desires the soul’s salvation;
My soul He, too, desires to save.
Therefore with Christian resignation
All earthly troubles I will brave.
His will be done eternally:
What pleases God, that pleases me.

My God has all things in His keeping;
He is the ever faithful friend.
He gives me laughter after weeping,
And all His ways in blessings end.
His love endures eternally:
What pleases God, that pleases me.

Jeremiah Bible Sketches

Jeremiah was a bullfrog, says the 70s song.

Do you recall two versions of Joy to the World?

Three Dog Night’s 1970 hit Joy to the World—“Jeremiah was a bullfrog, was a good friend of mine…these nonsense placeholder lyrics became part of rock history…” (Song facts).

Christians sing about the King of the universe in Joy to the world! the Lord is come! written over 300 years ago and published in 1,762 hymnals (hymnary.org). He rules the world with truth and grace…and wonders of his love! Believers strive to be with the King now and at the end of the world.

Jeremiah 1:5

I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 HCSB
I chose you before I formed you in the womb; I set you apart before you were born. I appointed you a prophet to the nations. Jeremiah 1:5 HCSB

No matter how well you know someone, there is One who knows him or her better.

God knew our name before His miracle of conception and development in our mothers’ wombs. Birth, also His miraculous event, drastically changed the habitat for our growth. God’s provision and spiritual gifts positively shape each of us mentally, physically, spiritually, and emotionally. Each one of us is His beloved work-in-progress, uniquely created. He allows us to participate in life’s process with free will to think and act upon what fills our hearts and souls.

“What would you do with a brain if you had one?” said Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz

The brain is designed to do awesome, wonderful and helpful things!

Then sin happened, corruption and death entered the picture; now, all human minds have capacity to…

  • forget to pray
  • pridefully think one can manage without Jesus
  • experience sadness and other unpleasant emotions
  • minimize own failings and maximize others’ failings
  • blame-shift
  • have arrogant self-centered focus
  • resent
  • envy
  • disrespect
  • have apathy toward others’ needs and desires
  • make unhealthy choices for self and others
  • shirk responsibilities
  • lie to self, others and God
  • fall for Satan’s lies and the world’s temptations
  • make choices that have negative consequences
  • misunderstand and be misunderstood
  • be confused
  • form manipulative schemes
  • presume
  • ponder ways to meddle
  • forget manners
  • hide, deny, or revel in errors of self and others
  • hold to self-righteousness
  • become rigid
  • crave power and control
  • think unjustly
  • dishonor feedback
  • demand unrealistic perfectionism of self or upon others
  • stubbornly refuse to receive or offer grace
  • dig up the past—someone else’s and own
  • forget past confessions are absolved
  • be afraid to live by faith
  • avoid being filled with God’s gifts

Deeds, experiences, thoughts, decisions, emotions, human relationships or memberships cannot rescue spiritually, nor can science or government. Christ, the final authority, is the only One who gives righteousness and life. Sadly deceived are those who think it is okay to make a choice to willfully cause death. Opposing this idea of so-called choice are citizens who, by inspiration of Scripture, respect God’s creation and timing actions about life. Standing for faithful principles, praying every life would be protected and nourished from conception to natural death, pro-life voters abhor the platform which endorses abortion and immoral behaviors.

The complex human brain is evidence for creation. Research, education, decisions, physical functionality, memories and emotions arise from brain activity. It is heartwarming to reminisce pleasant experiences shared with people parted (deceased or still living). Death or difficult experiences surrounding the point of separation may involve harsh memories as well as sorrow over weaknesses and failures.

God Almighty sees deeply into every heart and knows exactly what motivates each of us; we don’t always see or admit it ourselves. Help in this fallen world comes only in Jesus. God brings good out of evil. Good happens in relationships within family, church, and community as the Holy Spirit awakens and motivates us to humbly look up to His Son on the cross where, in retrospect, we see a glimpse of what perfect love is. Jesus took our punishment upon Himself to redeem us. Mercifully, God sees us through His Son who took away our sin. God is for us now and, soon, in His New Creation, sin will no longer exist—believers’ pain and tears will graciously cease because of Him! Trusting His righteousness supplies relief. Faith provides repentance to prepare humble believers for Judgement Day. In both good and hard times, the Holy Spirit generates gratitude for the certain hope, forgiveness, and help that is in Christ. God’s Word teaches us how to live forgiven.

Consistent training in and remembering God’s Word is vital for all sinful men, women and children. It is especially helpful during times of doubt, trouble, oppression, abuse and being violated on personal or national levels.

“We never know when persecution may come, when technology or even access to Bibles and churches may go away. We’re getting a taste of that now in the quarantine time. So, it drives home the point that we need to have Scripture … on our hearts and our minds.” Chaplain Rev. Sean Daenzer

Jeremiah—God’s messenger of justice and grace.

Thousands of years ago, hundreds before Jesus, Jeremiah, a priest, warned people about idolatry, urging that they would repent and receive God’s mercy and grace. God-the-Word told Jeremiah what to say and gave him confidence.

Jeremiah 6:16a

This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16a NIV
This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16a NIV

Prayer is God’s gift to all who are willing to receive it. Faith offers repentance, stirs gratitude for His mercies, and encourages the humble to strive to follow Jesus wholeheartedly.

Jesus told us to pray or meditate on His excellent Lord’s Prayer. He also provides the Psalms, plus, reflective, Scripture-focused prayers authored by Christians. By His grace, we may send up prayers in our own words about many specific things in relation to what we know about Scripture, spontaneously throughout each day. We ask friends to pray for us and ask what type of prayers they want. We pray for enemies because Jesus loves, wants to save, forgive and care for them. The Holy Spirit goes so far as interceding when we don’t know what to pray, helps us pray, and conforms the heart with confidence in our loving God. We pray that all of our prayers would be within His will, fruitful for people around us, and bring Him glory.

The Church is for sinners. If you’re like me, we know we are sinners.

Christ only saves sinners who repent, believe, and are baptized. Satan works hard to fool us about our total dependence on Christ. The devil’s goal is to deceive us with lies that spending time in God’s Word and attending church are unnecessary. When we fall for those lies, we neglect opportunities worship supplies to keep faith alive. To reject receiving God’s gifts by one’s own choice leads to loss of nourishment and power needed to live within the Holy Spirit’s saving faith. The Bible warns about depending on activity, things, or people, rather than God. Some will not be saved and they want to take others with them. That is a sobering thought. Misery follows the death of an unbeliever when, apart from God, they will suffer forever in hell.

Christians pray for those who

  • haven’t heard, don’t believe, or doubt Jesus is the one and only Way to salvation—to receive knowledge and gifts of the faith
  • choose absence after formerly being active in the Church—to return for the gifts that they once received and still need
  • believe—for strength to cling to gifts of the faith, thanking God for love, rest, protection, and for guidance to joyfully be a light to others

Jeremiah 17:7-8

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV “Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV
“Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water, that sends out its roots by the stream, and does not fear when heat comes, for its leaves remain green, and is not anxious in the year of drought, for it does not cease to bear fruit.” Jeremiah 17:7-8 ESV

The Creator is in control.

“The word that came to Jeremiah from the Lord: ‘Arise, and go down to the potter’s house, and there I will let you hear my words.’ So I went down to the potter’s house, and there he was working at his wheel. And the vessel he was making of clay was spoiled in the potter’s hand, and he reworked it into another vessel, as it seemed good to the potter to do.” Jeremiah 18:1-4 ESV

God knows everyone is broken and spoiled.

Our own sinfulness and the sin all around us cause damage and consequences. Water of Baptism makes the pill of discipline possible to swallow. It’s a lifetime prescription with written instructions and always refillable. As we hear God’s Word (actually listen and rest in it) we are healed and molded into Christ’s image to serve and reflect Him in what we think, say, and do. No one can reflect Him perfectly. The Lord patiently keeps on shaping us by His Word of Law and Gospel, as well as forgiveness and strength to live in peace and unity which comes to us in The Lord’s Supper. Solace, security, and genuine love come from Almighty God who gives us eyes to recognize idols in our lives. He offers repentance in His perfect masterpiece, Christ.

Grace is resistible.

It is possible for humans to forfeit God’s mercy by

1. unbelief (antagonism toward God—Jesus Christ is Lord and Savior)

2. trying to get to heaven by one’s own works (this is same as unbelief)

Only by grace in Christ, we let go of pride. His blessing moves us to pray for those who hurt us. Perhaps not all will, yet, some people do receive the love of God we share. God equips us to joyfully move forward, thrive, and treat others kindly.

Jeremiah 23:29

Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:29 ESV
Is not my word like fire, declares the Lord, and like a hammer that breaks the rock in pieces? Jeremiah 23:29 ESV

God sees into the heart and knows all.

The devil tempts us with lies of the world which approve sin (go with it) or lies about earning grace by what you do; these mean despising Truth of God’s Word which is living, active, and trustworthy. We train by the loving Word which…

  • teaches how to live in preparation for the next life
    • trust and give God the glory
    • flee evil and expose darkness
    • live honestly and ambitiously
    • blush over wrongs and repent
    • gladly receive and offer reconciliation
    • suffer by the grace of God
    • thankfully and gladly work
    • heal in the balm of Christ’s work
    • forgive and pray for others in Jesus Name
    • listen compassionately
    • share truth in love
  • warns unbelievers of eternal hell
  • promises victory in Jesus who rescues sinners and will return and take believers to live in paradise forever with Him

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV
For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope. Jeremiah 29:11 ESV

For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

God’s plan required punishment and correction for our sin.

Compassion, plans and promises are tied together in Jesus Christ whose death and resurrection saves believers. He faithfully sustains people in an imperfect world with forgiveness, healing, restoration, wholeness, protection, and wisdom. God wants us to participate.

“The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9 ESV

Thankfully, Christian discipline is for God’s good purpose. Sometimes God uses sickness, enemies, wars and difficulties to draw us to His Word. Suffering can be one part of God’s plan to intend growth. Christ knows your pain. He faithfully soothes wounds of those who trust Him. All things will be made right at the time God’s loving plan continues at the exact moment of His choosing. Until then, repentant Christians contently persevere, think eternally, and pray that God would forgive, protect, provide, comfort, inspire and bring more people to faith in Jesus.

“No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11). God shows His love even in trials and disciplines that encircle us. Through them He…

  • exposes our frailty and need of Him
  • teaches lessons He knows will benefit us
  • freely offers victory by establishing, sustaining and strengthening the faith
  • brings us even closer to Him, turning trust into gratitude
  • ignites desire to share His love

“It has been said there are two ways to open a flower bud. You can force the petals apart and, in doing so, destroy the flower or you can leave it alone until slowly but surely, God unfolds it.” LWML

Jeremiah 31:25

For I will satisfy the weary soul, and every languishing soul I will replenish.” Jeremiah 31:25 ESV

Pray

Lord Jesus, thank you for Your mercy, patience, and reminding us You are where our help comes from. It is You who picks us up when we fall. Your extreme love covers our insufficiency, humbles arrogance, breaks down walls of isolation, thaws ice, softens hardness, tenderizes rudeness and forgives cruelty. Help us to see and admit faults. Mend and shape me and each person with repentance and eagerness to love You and pray for others. You desire all people would believe. You were brought low to redeem us. You refine us in unexpected ways far beyond our comprehension. We know You did not create us to be robots and it is a mystery that You allow people to reject Your invitation of faith; we ask that You remember and work in them so they do not put You off until it is too late for them to turn around. Protect and preserve the faith in all who rely on You to restore all things. Stand by and comfort all who fear, love, and trust You above all things. Thank you for rest in Your brilliant love and honorable grace. Amen.

Ecclesiastes Bible Sketches

Living life backwards

Preparing to die will teach you how to live

In the brevity of life, ignorance is not bliss—it only fools us for a time. Ecclesiastes is God’s Word keeping it real. We learn life is not to be lived as for gain but as for the gift of God. Life in Christ is our wisdom which gives life and suffering meaning. The Christian experience understands the vastness of love. The more intensely you love, the more you hurt in loss. The more you know, the more you realize you don’t know.

Ecclesiastes 2:24-25

There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment[a] in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, 25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? Ecclesiastes 2:24-25
There is nothing better for a person than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God, for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment? —Ecclesiastes 2:24-25

Toil for gain leads to becoming a slave to it—controlled by meaningless vanity, we see weariness, broken mind, discontent, always wanting more—even human wisdom is futile; ambition can be a vice if not in Christ.

God is the giver of life who provides meaning to it and ability to work for a living. Glory and gratitude to His mercies! Holy Spirit-given faith in Jesus’ work, finished for us on the cross—descent to hell, bodily resurrection and ascension—means grace and victory for repentant sinners.

Ecclesiastes 3:1,6b

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to keep, and a time to cast away Ecclesiastes 3:1,6b
For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to keep, and a time to cast away —Ecclesiastes 3:1,6b

Cycles of life, from peace and building up to war and destruction, can’t be changed.

Often bad times follow good times; also, often good times follow the bad! Nothing a person does changes these revolving cycles. We know there is more to existence. We try, yet we cannot figure out God’s plans and purposes. By faith given to us, we receive humility to seek Him and ask Him to bless us.

Being caught up in cycles of oppression, envy-fueled labor, worry over wealth, and loneliness add to meaningless of life without God.

Life is hard and messy; however, this does not mean suffering has no value and meaning. Pain and trouble help give perspective to joy, hope, and solace. Wisdom is gained in getting through it. There are abundant opportunities to grow in wisdom for life when we are confident it is in the Lord’s control through Christ. Christian prayer—giving expression to the fullness of emotion and repentance—gets at the completeness of who we are as creatures of God, brings healing, hope, forgiveness and consolation.

Life is not fair, it is corrupted by sin. Don’t set out to search the answer to “why?”—you’ll be disappointed and frustrated. Sin and the devil tries to suck joy from us by tempting us with power. How is it fair that One Man should have to take on the sin of everyone else?

God has drowned sin to death in Christ. The communion of saints connects us to loved ones here and beyond. Repentance is the way to be satisfied and content, remembering the authority of Jesus never goes away. People who trust Christ crave His Word for cleansing, healing, and release. Christ suffered for us. He goes into death and explodes it. Repentant believers have present joy and certain hope of eternal life with Him.

We shouldn’t live in isolation (inward focus), but in relationship with other people who are in Christ (outward focus).

It is not always what you speak but how you speak. You are not what you think you are, but what you think, you are. Take self-diagnosis—ask yourself whom you spend most of your time thinking about.

We look for relief from fear, angst, sadness. Feelings aren’t our sole source of identity.

“…Our value is determined by the God who created us and His Son, our Savior Jesus Christ, who redeemed us. Our Heavenly Father is the Master Craftsman Who designed each minute part of us! Whether our hands are strong and firm or arthritic and weak, they can be folded to thank the God who created them. Whether our feet are long or short, narrow or wide, strong or no longer able to support us, they are able to walk in His ways…” Mustard Seed Devotions, August 07, 2021, Lutheran Women’s Missionary League

We find joy in faith; Christ’s obedience—love He has for us—let it settle in you. Knowledge about God is not the same as fear, love and trust in God.

“…if it is peace you seek—true, everlasting peace, then look to Him who has broken down the ‘dividing wall of hostility,’ separating us from God. If it is new life you’re looking for, then believe in Jesus Christ and you will find it…” Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries

Honesty in the name of love and truth is good.

God knows. Think deeply, speak kindly. Be careful of using many words that don’t say much. Tune in to disordered passions, desires, pride, and spiritual laziness. Realize even wisdom can never attain the control over life we desire. Spiritual arrogance, haughtiness, legalism and demeaning actions leave others feeling damaged, hurt and frustrated. Satan wants us to be in despair when things aren’t going well.

Humility is helpful in all things—especially acknowledging your own sinful weaknesses while using wisdom to help others. We can plant seed, yet only God, the Master over everything we do can make it grow. Look at failure through the lens of Grace which has been given to support what God has given us in life.

Repentance calls us to put away selfish and bad thoughts; it brings us to fill time with prayers—specific petitions in a constructive way. When praying for others

  • Focus on thanksgiving for them
  • For faith—communion with them
  • For wisdom in discernment and reaching out

Worship our Creator and King without letting personal dreams dictate how we approach Him.

  • Do not rationalize sins.
  • Don’t try to tell God how things should be.
  • Remember bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit given in Baptism.
  • Don’t go through religious motions without taking it to heart (hypocrisy).
  • Don’t bargain with God—this is foolish talk.
  • Exercise faith—meditate and pray out loud (there’s something powerful in hearing).
  • If we don’t know what to say; pray, read and listen to God’s Word, Psalms, devotional materials, hymns, creeds and prayers written by faithful people, available in person at church, in bookstores and online by streaming radio and podcasts.
  • Flow thoughts into prayers which shape the doing and being.
  • Reflect the fact we don’t know how to do or understand that which only God knows. Many things are beyond our scope. We don’t know how to predict the future, the weather, or trees falling; exactly how the Holy Spirit works; or, how to guarantee success or avoid failure.
  • Think about the undeserved reward in Christ’s victory

Faith keeps us mindful of who we are and Who is the Giver of all things.

Experience teaches the difficulties of time where we are situated. God will bring judgement and we live shrouded by death. We have two choices

  1. be grumpy about it—as a curse, trying to push it away
  2. live in Baptism—in hope, we live in Christ and He lives in us

Seeing consequences for the reality of our sinful condition, even in the midst of it all, God’s grace is mightily alive. God preserves the heart of those who trust Him. Confession and absolution cleanses, fills with peace and patience. His Spirit brings contentment even in sadness—helps us hold pain and suffering tenderly and see brief moments of joy.

He restores our soul. As we put trust in Jesus, we respond with thanksgiving and praise for

  • gifts of happiness
  • enjoyment of blessings
  • the promise of eternity with Him

Esther Bible Sketch

Who knows how to live these days?

Do you wonder what your purpose is in such a time as this?

“And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?” Esther 4:14b ESV Bible verse hand lettering marker sketch.

Day-to-day complexities of life’s relationships and personal responsibility to care for our own spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health cannot be managed alone.

Thankfully, our patient Savior provides all that is needed to face each moment of each day. His perfect plan and timing is over our head. We may simply receive help, forgiveness and comfort by trusting Jesus has already won the victory over sin, death, and evil. Abundant opportunities surround us on every side to seek Biblical wisdom, practice patience, and pay-it-forward by sharing Good News, grace and mercy.
“Sometimes life seems as if we are on an incredible journey—and then suddenly, the bus breaks down. We feel trapped in a desert of delay with no way to move on. And in the in-between, it seems God isn’t doing anything to fix our situation. We’re tempted to complain and pout. To grumble and grow bitter. That’s when we need to remember the story of Esther and how God worked behind the scenes to rescue her people. We wait well when we remind ourselves that even while we’re waiting, our Lord is paving the way ahead, scheduling exciting experiences, and booking new destinations for our lives. That’s when we need to choose to rest in God’s providence.” Sharla Fritz in her book: Waiting—A Bible Study on Patience, Hope, and Trust
The Holy Spirit moves faithful people to encourage and listen to each other. He knows each person’s unique roles in personal and community relationships—lays out opportunities, provides guidance—and carries out His promise to defend, protect, and deliver those who seek Him. The only help we can offer each other is in full light of His Word and gifts revealed in Christ crucified for us. We may sow many seeds, share our faith everywhere we go, yet it is not us—it is our Creator who provides nutrients and growth to each individual who is willing to honestly receive His Word. Trusting God’s powerful love, we confidently pray to our Advocate. We may live by grace throughout life’s storms until the Last Day when He makes final judgement and harvests His crop of humble, repentant believers to live forever with Him.
“His winnowing fork is in his hand, to clear his threshing floor and to gather the wheat into his barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Luke 3:17 ESV
“For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.” Romans 8:5–6 ESV
God knows His purpose and plans. Our Heavenly Father offers salvation to bring all souls out of trouble through faith which brings repentance and trusts Jesus is the way to peace beyond understanding.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28 ESV

Book of the Bible dedicated to Esther

“Esther is the heroine of the biblical book that bears her name. Her Jewish name was Hadassah, which means ‘myrtle.’ Her beauty, charm, and courage served her well as queen to King Ahasuerus. In that role she was able to save her people from the mass extermination that Haman, the king’s chief advisor, had planned (2:19–4:17). Esther’s efforts to uncover the plot resulted in the hanging of Haman on the very same gallows that he had built for Mordecai, her uncle and guardian. Then the king named Mordecai minister of state in Haman’s place. This story is an example of how God intervenes on behalf of his people to deliver them from evil, as here through Esther he preserved the Old Testament people through whom the Messiah would come.”
Commemoration Biographies
Scripture speaks about uncovering lies and evil in several instances. Jesus is all about truth.
