Haggai Bible Sketch

What are your priorities?

Do you know how sorrow turns to joy?

It is an amazingly complex process believed by faith. Do you know Who turns sorrow to joy?

“Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

Immanuel means God is with us. Read more… A View into the Temptation via the Two Natures of Christ.

Haggai 1:13

“I am with you, declares the Lord.” Haggai 1:13b ESV
“I am with you, declares the Lord.” Haggai 1:13b ESV

Do you look forward to the ultimate deadline?

When the drop-dead deadline was mentioned at a company where I used to work, we prioritized absolutely everything to set goals and achieve results before the latest time or date by which the process should be completed. Our skilled, dedicated team took the schedule seriously with just a degree of flexibility. My creative work also served to make corrections for mistakes and edits. Mutual gratitude and hearing of the project’s positive impact were rewards of success in meeting or exceeding the client’s expectations.

Individuals, families of faith, larger communities—we are works-in-progress heading toward a personal end of time as we know it. When? No one knows! By faith in Christ we are ready for the drop-dead-deadline Day of Judgement.

God loves us even though we are sinners. To save us from punishment we deserve for our dark thoughts and selfish way of living, He left His glorious comfort zone to be born as an infant. Jesus grew up doing no wrong and after 33 years He was crucified on the cross to win the victory over guilt and death, hopelessness and despair. God gives His gifts. We receive them. God creates and perfects His gift of faith in Christ in order to pardon our faults, comfort us, and restore our bodies and souls! All who expect to see and welcome Jesus when He comes again on the Last Day will be relieved of their loneliness and pain caused by their own failures and sin of others.

Sadly, some people reject gifts and despise the giver. Imagine what God thinks of this. To put it bluntly: unless they wake up, are baptized or remember their baptism, open their eyes, ears, and hearts to receive the Gospel before it is too late, they will be severely disappointed being outside of the faith or choosing to deny the gift of Holy Spirit.

What happens at the End of Time?

Jesus promised He will return in power and glory to meet humankind in this physical world. Even bodies of all who have previously died will be brought back to life. Though there will be destruction, new heavens and new earth will be created. A division will take place.

  1. All who are set free in faith, joined to the Word, will be in God’s perfect new creation for infinity with Him in paradise where there will never be sin to weigh them down—nor tears, nor pain—ever again!
  2. I pray no one reading this post will be misaligned with those judged by God to be rejecting the Holy Spirit’s faith in Jesus. Scripture says they are condemned to suffer eternity with Satan.

What behavioral goals can you set?

Spiritual, emotional, mental and physical health takes effort and gratitude. Reality may not be as easy as we think it is supposed to be. Change is often unwelcome or difficult, yet certain changes are really great! By grace, walk with your Counselor the Prince of Peace. Acknowledge your Friend’s wisdom and power. Trust your life to His Word for

  • reliable information for safety, growth and healing
  • instructions to act upon
  • advice to refine
  • understanding to thrive relationships with mutual love—affirming words, humility and grace
  • warnings to flee evil
  • prayer, exercise, rest, nutrition
  • beginning with repentance
  • perseverance to learn about, receive, and remain in the faith

God’s love and mercy never changes. Whether you are new to the faith or have been mercifully following Jesus as long as you remember, be sure that He doesn’t take second place to any god, any person, any idea, or anything we put above Him. To keep us in the faith, He may test; yet, the Holy Spirit does not tempt

The fallen angel Satan lies and tempts. His goal is to destroy everyone’s faith in Jesus through various forms of isolation. Only God’s power prepares us to confess and helps us resist all types of sin which hurts us and others.

You name it, the list goes on. Satan is always working—especially on Christians—to prevent fruitful planning that would turn toward God in repentance, connection, grace, healing and growth.

“I find that naming the sin for what it is, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, and envy, is an aid in squashing it, and an aid to my own confession of sins.” —Jealousy in the Brotherhood, The Rev. David H. Petersen

Instead of believing lies which separate us from God, we must believe Jesus defeated the devil and provides the way out of temptations which are traps to get us stuck apart from the faith.

Although God’s law is a beautiful loving way, it can never deliver what it demands: perfection. Thankfully, Faith of Christ works through love to achieve what the law commands!

Salvation doesn’t depend on results of an effort to obey, or resolve to follow through on a self-made decision. If it did, who could ever do enough or be holy enough for our Creator’s demand of perfection? No one could rest in peace.

Thankfully, God cares! He works in our messes. His faithfulness to His promises is for all people. Everyone’s had at least one type of challenge, trouble or need—if not noticed yet, it might catch up to you when you aren’t expecting it. Before we were born, God had already called us His own and planned a way to bless us by Christ’s holy compassionate work for us. He listens to prayers and instills courage to not sin. Deep trust to receive help to confess failures and freedom to live by the Spirit’s way comes from God. Faith

  • hears and takes to heart what God commands
  • remembers God’s love covers failures
  • finds comfort in the Gospel
  • prays for all people
  • is eager to become more equipped through Bible study
  • recognizes need for Christ’s humility
  • asks God to forgive and strengthen
  • asks people to forgive
  • utilizes a teachable mind to receive help available
  • generously forgives those who offend
  • seeks opportunities to communicate about God’s gifts
  • knocks that God will open the door to His leading and protection
  • serves others, in love, with gentleness and a soft heart
  • appreciates discipline
  • endures patiently
  • expects God’s plan to function in unexpected ways
  • remains calm and content, dependent on Jesus
  • waits expectantly

The Source of hope and joy cannot be taken away by anything the world throws at us.

Truth is, faith believes our holiness depends completely on the perfect love of God who became man to save us. Born of a humble virgin over 2000 years ago, Jesus lived perfectly although He was tempted by the devil, plus He was tortured and mocked by people just like you and me. He suffered and died for us, that we may have eternal life. He defeated the power of the devil and destroyed death when He rose from the grave and ascended to heaven. This is how God rescued us from punishment we deserve for breaking and failing to live up to His perfect and good law.

The ultimate humble praise is to receive forgiveness through God’s glorious gifts.

Christ’s perfection is given to us in Baptism along with hearing the Word of God which seals faith and penetrates hearts to love. The Holy Spirit works to provide insight to what God wants us to know. It’s found in accurate, ancient literature, the Bible. Everyone has an open invitation to receive God’s power to change life. Eternal life begins at Baptism when God’s Spirit enters and remains unless it is rejected. Peace is in Jesus Light-of-the-World who shines truth in darkness, forgives, heals brokenness, teaches, comforts, and protects from suffering eternal punishment in hell.

In four elements at the sacrament of Holy Communion, the faith which was received in Baptism is fed. Humbly received, it forgives and strengthens the hope it gives. If you aren’t sure about all this, please find a church. Talk with a Christian friend or pastor. Ask for help to learn more.

The Lord is with us and His love is better than life. It’s our responsibility to receive His gifts so that we believe Jesus as Savior and Deliverer. We bring God glory, praise, obedience, worship—all within freedom of the will and opportunity to make our own choices. While there is grace moment-by-moment, we may seize every opportunity to live in the Light.

Neglecting to make a priority of receiving Christ’s forgiveness and strength brings one dangerously closer to missing the most important deadline of this life. How dreary and dark are the short- and long-term consequences of having no remorse or sorrow over

  • passing judgement on someone
  • perpetually falling for the same temptation
  • rebellion to trust the authority of God’s Word
  • refusal to listen and change
  • aimless procrastination
  • stubbornly spin wheels stuck in the rut of self-satisfaction
  • minimizing and denial of wrongs done and good actions left undone

It is possible to develop a cold, diamond-hard heart that pushes God’s grace away. Keeping Him at a distance, know-it-all thinking, risks doubt creeping in until denial of God’s love and atonement completely sets in.

Don’t lose hope. God wants to draw us close and give His peace right here and now. He erases fear of the deadline by protecting and promising to take those who trust Him into eternity!

Thanks be to God for continually making change which calls us back to Him in the faith. His mercy gives rest which covers worry, broken dreams, and hardships. Clarity for the need to continually focus on trusting Him is found in the Word which blesses us where He is and fills us with resilience. His will is done for us so we can be excited about our present and future! Christ’s peace emits gratitude and desire to do whatever He gives us to do. We are God’s instrument, given privilege to love, share life, and tell what He has done to provide forgiveness to us. We ask Him to help us respectfully turn to Him. The Holy Spirit reminds us to thank Him for mercy and show mercy to others.

Why not allow God to meet you at church where He serves His Word, forgiveness, strength, growth and encouragement?! If you have questions, be brave and ask for information about new membership class and Bible study class opportunities!

We are adopted as children of God in Baptism, beloved, just as He called Jesus His “beloved Son.” God makes His children a priority.

“See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God” 1 John 3:1a

The Heavenly Father’s children

  • look to Him in wonder, awe, reverence and humility
  • are open to grace
  • pray for contentment
  • take it all in, soak up the Word, keep learning more
  • learn how to respond and thank their Creator at all times in life
  • know He loved us first
  • accept help, connect, share this kind of love with one another

Ezekiel Bible Sketch

An invitation to turn and live!

RSVP before the Last Day.

Only God the Father knows when.

Special events and party invitations may include a request to respond. Options to consider are: whether or not to plan to participate, plus, whether to reply or to ignore the RSVP. Acceptance requires a change of former plans and routine. Gratitude about the invitation, and the person who sent it, floods the soul. New actions and special efforts are made. When the day of the event arrives, plans have previously been carried out by the one who created the invitation. Trained people may have been called to help organize everything and prepare something to serve all who’ve replied with “Yes, I’m in, and thank you!”. Time together is shared and cherished as life is joyfully celebrated.

For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.” Ezekial 18:32
For I have no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Lord God; so turn, and live.” Ezekiel 18:32 ESV

The special event process described is similar to God’s free gift of faith in Christ as Savior.

The gift is for everyone! Our Creator wants us all to live freely and have the life He designed! He created us as children to love Him, not to control us like robots. Plus, God desires that we love each other like He loves us and that we not expect to to control each other like robots. People receive, decline or ignore God’s invitation.

Life is communion with God who is love. Instructions written on our heart and throughout Scripture enable us to know Him. We are accountable to our Creator to live virtuously.

All of us sin. We should not blame God and others for our own sins. God wants us to turn from rebellion against Him. When we turn our back to God, the only thing He will remember is our sins. Rather than falling into arrogance, God wants us to be honest, get up, turn around, and ask Him to have mercy and cleanse us.

“Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Blessed is the one who fears the Lord always, but whoever hardens his heart will fall into calamity.” Proverbs 28:13-14

“And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.Ezekiel 36:26

God doesn’t want anyone to die rejecting His Holy Spirit. Those who deny Him, are lost, misguided by Satan’s lies, evil in the world, and our own selfish nature… jealously, proudly, deceitfully enticing others to join in rebellion against the Word… fearlessly succumbing to temptations with no remorse or desire to give up or renounce a habit, way of life, false religion, or attitude of entitlement

God tells us to turn from sin and humbly ask for mercy in the Name of His Son so that we may have peace that when we leave this dark world, we will rest in the fulfillment of His promise to spare us from the destination of eternal suffering, apart from His glory. Almighty God knows all, is everywhere and has all authority as final judge.

Our loving God provides courage and tenacity for a life of repentance together with Him which He always prefers over death and separation from Him. In the grace-filled life we live right here and now, He offers opportunities to hear His Word. He gives saving faith in Christ. His Spirit leads to self-examination, confession of wrongs, and trust in perfect and gracious Jesus for mercy.

God won’t remember the sins of those who are turned toward Him.

God wants us to participate where sinners gather to receive His gifts of forgiveness and strength at church. He doesn’t want us to push Him and others away. Jesus is the only Way to eternal life. He shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, He took our punishment. He died for us, rose from the dead and ascended to heaven so we may live. His gift of repentance fills us with His Holy Spirit so we can honor Him with our lives. By grace, I am in. I look forward to seeing faithful believers who’ve gone before me and hope to see you, soon, in the presence of Jesus in celebration of the Last Day!

Throughout the Bible, our loving God commands certain things for our own good and the good of others. He is our refuge and our help comes from Him. Ask, seek and knock are three imperatives for us to respond.

Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.” Matthew 7:7-8

“Prayer: Dear Heavenly Father, You are a God who welcomes the weary. Thank you for giving your children the worship service: a place where we can come with our shaking hands and be steadied by Your certain Word. Thank you for Jesus, who poured Himself out for us, that we may have life in Him. Let His word be our strength and comfort when we are wounded and weary. Care for us, Lord, and make Your love for us overflow to others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.” Wounded Workers devotion

1 Samuel Bible Sketch

Having great love for all people, God guards His faithful

Despite human evil, we can trust that God’s purpose is to oppose the proud and elevate the humble.

“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail.” 1 Samuel 2:9 ESV Bible verse hand lettering sketch.
“He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness, for not by might shall a man prevail.” 1 Samuel 2:9 ESV Bible verse hand lettering sketch.

Arrogance is wickedly blinding.

Pride and other sin left unchecked may cause
  • false confidence in knowledge, good works, charity
  • denial or ignorance of one’s own sinfulness
  • grudge bearing
  • blame-shifting
  • unhealthy sense of entitlement
  • insensitivity to everyone else’s thoughts, opinions, desires, and needs
  • tendency to hurl rude insults
  • distortion of truth
  • misleading self and others
  • tempting people
  • refusal to forgive people who’ve genuinely apologized
  • inability to receive forgiveness which others desire to offer
  • mental, physical, emotional and spiritual harm to self and those near
  • death
Scary, right? Can everyone identify guilt of something on this list, to a degree, perhaps if only in thought? Death is inevitable to even seemingly pious men and women.

The ungodly can take comfort in our Rock of Escape. God, to save us from His wrath, gave His Son to be crucified to atone for the sin of the world. In our sinful nature, we receive this by faith.

  • God’s Word provides faith in our Savior who, for our redemption, perfectly—without one single sin of His own, but because of our sin—faced all kinds of temptations, pain, suffering, took an unfair penalty of death on the cross, was bodily raised on the third day, ascended to Our Father in heaven, and lives now in the hearts of all who believe this and are baptized.
  • The Holy Spirit works trust to believe we can take refuge in Christ’s victory over sin, death and betrayal and provides encouragement to live as people loved by God.
  • Scripture shows us God’s good design for creation and how He wants us to live. The Word doesn’t make us able to live to the perfection of this design; yet, it provides necessary faith which humbles us to admit failures, wrong actions, thoughts, inadequacies and teaches us to do our very best to turn away from repeating these.
  • Only Christ delivers us from death. No one one saves themselves or others from the entanglement of idols (putting self, other people, activities and things higher than love for God). Doubt weakens believers who constantly need to reach out for help through
    • prayer for strength and wisdom to trust and share the Gospel
    • worship and staying in the Word in a variety of ways
    • nourishment at the Lord’s Table (for now, during corona virus restrictions, we patiently wait and focus on our need to be saved by the body and blood of Christ)
    • safe environments to grow and preserve our faith in the company of caring, respectful Christians
  • Brokenhearted, repentant people of faith
    • have certain hope in anticipation of glory to come in the next life
    • find joy in life, even in suffering because it prepares for the future
    • cling to the Lord who, in mercy, understands the needs of all people and provides all good things for physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being
    • thankfully, seek to help and forgive others just as Christ helps and forgives them
    • are spared, protected and delivered from sin, evil, and death
    • have patient confidence that God is using for His good purposes, even what Satan intends for evil
    • worship God in light—His power of spirit and truth
We all face (or will face) troubles in this life. Now, we live in a state of grace until the Last Day when life as we know it ends and each person will be in one of two final and eternal destinations:
  1. the faithful have tears wiped away, gloriously at home with Jesus in heaven
  2. unbelievers cut off in darkness with Satan, the father of lies, in hell

Pray in the Name of Jesus

Dear Lord, you know my need before I even ask. Guard me in Your forgiveness and keep me in faith. Amen.

What is your favorite season: spring summer, autumn (fall) or winter?

Blessed by the spring robin and faith in Jesus

Blessed Spring Robin by Elizabeth Knaus using Adobe Illustrator software.

The calendar is marked and the climate changes with seasons. God’s creation instinctively knows what to do in order to survive and thrive.

He made the moon to mark the seasons; the sun knows its time for setting. Psalm 104:19 ESV
In one year, four distinctive three-month seasons each bring something different: occasional snow in winter, pleasant temperatures in spring/fall, and intense heat during summer. This fluctuation occurs in Kansas where I live; yet, near the equator temperatures remain steady and seasons are marked by the amount of precipitation that is received.

We live during the season of grace on earth before Jesus Christ returns on the Last Day.

“Every generation should expect Christ’s return as they see the signs of the end times. … God wants all people to come to believe and trust in His Son for their salvation and to lead holy lives in service to Him, eagerly awaiting with patience and perseverance His return on the last day.” Excerpt from pdf “What About . . .The New Millenniumby Dr. A.L. Barry, past President of The Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod
We know there will be an end, yet in sin we often:
  • slip up on good intentions
  • procrastinate
  • reject opportunities to receive His gifts of Word and Sacrament
  • ignore chances to honor Him through caring and sharing with others
  • worship and praise Him less or not at all
  • become selfish with time, talent and money
  • separate ourselves from Him
  • apathetically, become complacent toward churches who support false teachers that twist His truth or flat-out reject it
  • claim we don’t need Him/His forgiveness (are blind to our own sin)
  • are lazy
  • the list goes on as we think and act in ways that are against His commandments
There is no getting around it. We sin without even knowing it!
They do not say in their hearts, ‘Let us fear the Lord our God, who gives the rain in its season, the autumn rain and the spring rain, and keeps for us the weeks appointed for the harvest.’ Jeremiah 5:24 ESV
God loves us and hates sin. The Spirit provides faith, desire and ability to repent and turn away from sin. His command for us is to put Him above all our “small-g” gods and look to His Son whose virgin birth, perfect life, suffering, death and bodily resurrection took away the punishment we deserve. Only in Christ we receive forgiveness. Wisdom, courage and power is ours when we hear and read His Word. Out of thanksgiving, we strive to honor Him by making an effort to do great things and share His love.

Lovely sights in nature draw me to my Creator.

I grew up in Minnesota where a robin sighting marks the beginning of spring. We enjoyed ice skating and building snowmen, but winters started early and were long-lasting. Whoever happened to see the first robin was somewhat of a hero who brought a little joy into the day! After I moved over 500 miles south, I learned that Kansans see robins two months before Minnesotans do and the warmer climate allows us to grow different plants. With the help of God we: confess/repent/recieve forgiveness of sin; watch our diet and exercise to improve our health; keep up property landscape aesthetics. We must clean the yard, prune pampas grass, physically and spiritually clean up our act. Spring is a season to start fresh growth.

Today I went for a walk and saw the largest flock of robins I’d ever seen; a rough estimate is over 50 of them! Repeatedly, they were taking-off and landing in the grass ditch near the Solomon River. I enjoy observing the mysterious lives of birds and imagining dreamy things like the ability to fly. I’m not alone—the birding hobby soars in popularity across North America. It is an art and science.
My parents enjoyed watching birds. They kept this pair of antique binoculars by the back door window. The vintage globe sat on the filing cabinet in the room we called den. Now they’re displayed on a stacking bookcase I inherited from my maternal grandmother. The cherished handiwork of my mother, Hardanger embroidery or “Hardangersøm”, was a Christmas gift which must have taken many hours to create. The green vase holds April plant clippings from my back yard including purple iris and viburnum alleghany.

Dad’s favorite bird species inspired him and Mom to study their patterns.

Dad built fancy hotels for purple martins. To track migration patterns, Mom went online at the library to check sighting data which she reported back to Dad. Together, they anticipated the arrival of when their martins would check in. I imagine their bird watching hobby was sparked by their interest in the weather which had been an important aspect of their occupational livelihood as seed crop farmers before retirement.

In their lives I remember that in everything — the good and hard times — they studied the Word, gave thanks, and trusted His will to be done through Jesus Christ. They had peace.
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they? Matthew 6:25-26

In the seasons of a Christian’s life,

… we walk by faith, not by sight. … 2 Corinthians 5
No matter what we face, in God’s Word we can start each day fresh. His forgiveness is always there for us to receive when we pray and remember our baptism in Jesus Christ who suffered for us so by His pure grace we can live. He knows our challenges and pain. He comforts us and celebrates our joys — right here, right now — until the day we die and eternal life with Him is ours.
For everything there is a season,
and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace.
Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ESV

Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
